SaaS Pegasus is—at least for now—a closed-source, proprietary product. However, it is built on top of a vast open-source ecosystem.
I have wrestled with this situation since the early days of Pegasus. Pegasus benefits from the work of thousands of people who have shared their work for free. And while Pegasus has helped many entrepreneurs create life-changing businesses, it has done little to give back to the developers whose work it builds on.
As a small step towards rectifying this imbalance, I'm proud to announce that Pegasus has just adopted the Open Source Pledge. This means that Pegasus will donate at least $2,000 per-person, per-year, to open source projects, developers, and foundations.
I just made these one-time donations to the following libraries and projects that Pegasus depends on:
Project | Amount |
---|---|
Django | $1,500 |
django-allauth | $150 |
htmx | $150 |
dj-stripe | $150 |
celery | $150 |
Total | $2,100 |
While this is by no means a complete or fair representation of the software that Pegasus depends on, it’s a start that recognizes many major libraries that would be quite hard to replace in Pegasus. In 2025, I’ll set up recurring sponsorships and hopefully expand on this list.
Money is by no means the only way to support open source, and one thing I am hoping to do in 2025 is release much more open source tooling built on and around Pegasus. But for now, it’s a start and hopefully a way to say thanks to the people who have helped make Pegasus possible!
